Dr Steven Brand
Founder of New Horizon Economics and Honorary Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Plymouth.
Formally Head of the Accounting, Economics and Finance Division, University of Plymouth and Associate Professor of Economics.
Steven Brand has worked as an academic and consultant economist for around 30 years. He specialises in regional economic modelling, in particular social accounting / input-output models and their application. He has published in a range of high quality international journals including Regional Studies, PLoS ONE and the European Journal of Operations Management.
Key consulting projects and products include:
- The South West Regional Accounts, a publicly available economic data and impact analysis resource funded by the SW Regional Development Agency, supplied in the ECON | i user interface.
- The AMORE user interface, economic database and modelling suite, supplied to several LEPs such as Heart of the SW, West of England, Dorset LEP, ONE NE, as well as several Local Authorities (e.g. currently Plymouth LA).
- Training and after-sales support & advice in the application of regional impact models to the above clients.
- A range of bespoke socio-economic impact analyses. Private sector clients include Babcock Marine and HM Naval Base Devonport, South West Water, Three Mobile, Oldham Athletic FC and Plymouth Argyle FC; public/non-profit clients include LA/councils such as Plymouth CC and Power to Change.

ASSOCIATES

Professor Sheela Agarwal is Associate Head of University of Plymouth Business School (Research and Impact). Sheela is an interdisciplinary researcher, with a longstanding focus on socio-economic disparities of UK coastal communities. Through her role as Co-Director of the Centre for Coastal Communities she is experienced in high government level policy engagement.

Professor James Reade is Professor of Economics at the University of Reading. James is a world-leading sports economist. Recent collaboration with NHE includes an economic analysis of the UK ban on women’s football and a socio-economic impact analysis of Oldham Athletic FC.

Professor Max Munday is Professor of Economics and Director of the Welsh Economy Research Unit at Cardiff Business School. Prof Munday is widely published in the fields of economic evaluation, regional economic policy, development and tourism economics. Prof Munday and Dr Brand have previously collaborated on a number of academic works and consultancy projects.

Dr Tasos Kitsos is Associate Professor of Economics at the Department of Economics and International Business at Aston University and the regional development theme lead at the Centre for Business Prosperity. He has a strong track record of research and client-based consultancy in the field of regional economics and regional economic development.
